Local climate data for more participation

With the OK Klima, we are building a Switzerland-wide, regional climate rating and a platform that enables climate-conscious individuals and NGOs to take effective and direct action in their communities and cantons. A joint project with the Climate Alliance and Alliance Digitale.

Climate protection starts locally

Climate protection starts in your municipality and in your canton! You have important levers at your disposal to achieve a global impact.

OK Climate shows you how to activate these levers effectively. This will accelerate your path to net zero. We carry out a transparent and independent assessment of the climate policy of large Swiss municipalities and cantons and derive proposals for concrete measures.

Transparency, cooperation and citizen participation are at the centre of this project.

What OK Climate offers

Collecting climate data

We collect and collate all data on municipal and cantonal climate policy, where possible with the support of automation.

Evaluate and publish climate data

We derive an independent assessment of municipal and cantonal climate policy that is publicly accessible and easy to read - for people and organisations directly or indirectly concerned with climate, politicians and authorities, and ultimately for the entire interested population.

Enabling participation

Together, we influence local climate policy for the better, using various forms and approaches. We start where the data shows it is most effective.

The current situation

Political standstill

There is a lack of strong climate ambition at federal level - this has become even stronger with the new parliament.

Funds are local

Two thirds of public funds are with the cantons (44%) and municipalities (22%).

Lack of facts

There is a lack of information about local politics and opportunities to engage effectively, efficiently and systemically.

Lack of networking

There are thousands of people with climate awareness who are not all active and networked at communal and cantonal level.

Working together for net zero by 2040

Under the Paris Climate Agreement, Switzerland has committed to becoming climate-neutral by 2050. The Climate Alliance wants to achieve net zero by 2040. However, the current political measures are likely to fall well short of both targets.

The municipalities and cantons play a key role in implementing an efficient and effective climate policy. They have two thirds of public funds at their disposal and set the local framework conditions. However, they are not yet utilising all the levers available to them. This is partly because there is a lack of transparency regarding possible measures and their effectiveness.

A data platform with recommendations for action

With the support of the Migros Pioneer Fund and the Mercator Switzerland Foundation, the project is building a nationwide platform in full independence. It will show what additional levers are available and how they can be activated.

For politicians, authorities, climate organisations and the civilian population

The platform is aimed at politicians and authorities, as well as organisations that deal directly or indirectly with the climate and ultimately the entire interested population. It offers a holistic and transparent insight into the effectiveness of local climate policy and allows everyone to demand or support climate measures in their municipality or canton in a targeted manner.

Last but not least, all those involved should realise how relevant, low-threshold and effective local climate policy demands and measures can be and that commitment is worthwhile.
